Madrid, 19 October 2021. Castellana Properties, a leading real estate firm listed on the BME Growth exchange and a specialist in the acquisition, management and refurbishment of retail properties, has announced that all of its shopping centres are now BREEAM certified, a distinction recognising excellence in sustainable construction and property management. The latest site to renew its certification was the Vallsur Shopping Centre on 13 October. This means that Castellana Properties has achieved its goal of obtaining top green credentials for its entire shopping centre portfolio.

Its various properties received a mix of ‘exceptional’, ‘excellent’ and ‘very good’ ratings on conclusion of the assessment process. More specifically, in the area of property management, four centres were deemed ‘exceptional’ and two ‘excellent’; in terms of building specifications, there were five ratings of ‘excellent’ and one ‘very good’. Furthermore, the two shopping arcades at the company’s Granaita retail park put in a strong showing on their first attempt, obtaining scores of ‘excellent’ and ‘very good’ respectively.

BREEAM is the world’s leading provider of sustainability assessments for planning, infrastructure and development projects. Its seal recognises and appraises a property’s qualities from the perspective of sustainability and environmental impact, from the moment the first brick is laid, right through its useful life span to its potential refurbishment.

The rating system takes account of the environmental, social and economic performance of the building itself and its management model. Consequently, all BREEAM-certified developments can claim to offer superior sustainability and a focus on employee and community well-being. They also contribute to preserving natural resources in their immediate environments which makes them even stronger investment propositions.

In recent years, Castellana Properties has strengthened its position as a key player in the Spanish retail sector. Now, these efforts have been rewarded in the form of a fully BREEAM-certified portfolio. Particularly noteworthy is the company’s energy performance audit scheme, rolled out across 100% of its shopping centres. In addition, several centres are now able to generate their own renewable energy, thanks to the installation of solar photovoltaic panels.
