• With just three Spanish shopping centres being nominated in the “Commercial Project – In Use” category, the fact that two belong to Castellana Properties marks a veritable milestone in the firm’s stated mission to promote sustainability and respect for the environment

• The two centres to have made the shortlist are El Faro in Badajoz and Bahía Sur in Cádiz – the only centres nominated in their respective autonomous regions. Both centres are among those vying to scoop the award for the Commercial Project – In Use category, while El Faro is also one of the potential hopefuls in the Regional Award Western Europe category

• In 2021, all of the firm's shopping centres had received the BREEAM seal of approval, the certification awarded by the world’s leading authority in terms of sustainability and environmental building management

Castellana Properties, the specialist retail property acquisition, management and refurbishment firm listed on the BME Growth market, has received an impressive three nominations for the 2022 BREEAM Awards – now widely recognised as the most prestigious event on the global sustainability calendar. This year, Castellana Properties’ shopping centres are candidates in the “Commercial Project – In Use” and “Regional Award Western Europe” categories.

Only three Spanish shopping centres have made it onto the shortlist for the prestigious BREEAM Awards, with two – Bahía Sur and El Faro – belonging to Castellana Properties. These are the only shopping centres in Andalusia and Extremadura to be in with a chance of winning from a field of over 80 international projects. Both shopping centres have been nominated in the “Commercial Project – In Use” category, while El Faro is also in the running for the “Regional Award Western Europe”. The awards will be presented in London on 22 March, at the BREEAM Summit to be held at the Hilton London Bankside Hotel.

The hopeful winners were all selected from among the centres to receive the highest scores during the BREEAM sustainable building certification process. This marks a particular milestone for Castellana Properties as all of its shopping centres have now received the BREEAM seal of approval, with most being rated either “excellent” or “exceptional” during the assessment, which recognises sustainability excellence in properties and their management.

BREEAM is the world’s leading provider of sustainability assessments for planning, infrastructure and development projects. Its seal recognises and appraises a property’s qualities from the perspective of sustainability and environmental impact, from the moment the first brick is laid, right through its useful life span to its potential refurbishment.

Castellana Properties continues to strengthen its position as a key player in the Spanish retail sector in Spain, with a particularly strong record in sustainability management. It has made considerable efforts to couple strong economic growth with sustainable development, a strategy that benefits not only the shopping centre itself but the entire local community. Now, these efforts have been rewarded in the form of a fully BREEAM-certified portfolio.

Pedro Diaz, Chief Development Officer at Castellana Properties highlighted that “There is no better proof of our firm's commitment to sustainability than our continued work to improve the energy efficiency of our properties. For example, we have already started to roll out ambitious plans to install solar photovoltaic panels and electric vehicle charging points. At Castellana Properties, effective sustainability management forms a core part of who we are, and we are extremely proud that this has been recognised at the international level. My colleagues and I are deeply committed to making further progress and ensuring that our shopping centres always reflect the highest standards of environmental stewardship and make a positive impact on their communities".
